On 13 December, the Spanish National Aviation Safety Authority (AESA) organised an event to mark the 80th anniversary of ICAO, with the participation of all Spanish aviation industry representatives.
The Chairwoman of the ACVFFI asked AESA to participate in this event as well, because the voice of the victims was not represented, and because ICAO had done so during its 80th anniversary celebrations.
Finally, Pilar Vera could discussed the achievements and challenges in supporting air accident victims and their families, she highlights:
- The implementation of the main European regulations in 2010 and the creation of the first assistance plan in Spain in 2013.
The adoption of ICAO Document 9998 and its incorporation into recommended practices and audit plans. - The prohibition of lawyers from approaching victims during the first 45 days after an accident, in accordance with the Victims’ Statute Law.
- The recent establishment of the A20 Air Safety Foundation, inspired by the American Flight Safety Foundation.
- The importance of empathy and the work of professionals in improving aviation emergency response.
The President also pays tribute to the victims of flight JK5022 and thanks the representatives and organisations that have supported these initiatives. This speech underlines the need to always remember and support the victims and their families.
